Facebook Marketplace Local Only: What It Means and How to Set It
Facebook Marketplace shows local listings by default. How the location and radius settings work, why some listings appear from farther away, and how to adjust them.

How location works
Where to click

- Filters
- Location
- set city/area and radius
Facebook renames these menus periodically. If a label does not match, read the screen you are on rather than forcing this exact wording.
Every Marketplace search is centered on a location and a radius, both of which you control. There is no "browse everything, everywhere" mode — a center point is required by design, because Marketplace is built around local pickup as the default transaction type.
Setting or changing it
- Open Filters within Marketplace.
- Tap the Location field.
- Enter a specific city, zip code, or use your current location.
- Adjust the radius slider — commonly a range from a few miles up to 100+ miles depending on region.
The location you set here persists across sessions until you change it again, which is why listings can look "stuck" on an old city if you moved or traveled and never updated it.
Why non-local listings sometimes appear
Two things dilute what "local" means in the results:
- Shipped listings. Items eligible for Facebook's shipping checkout are not location-limited the way pickup items are, and they can appear in search results even when they originate far outside your radius.
- A stale or incorrect location setting. If your location was set once and never touched, results reflect that old point, not your current one — worth checking directly rather than assuming Marketplace is ignoring your location.
Setting radius as a seller
When you create a listing, it defaults to your account's set location. Buyers within their own search radius of that point will see it — the radius on a listing search is the buyer's setting, not something a seller controls per-listing beyond choosing local pickup versus shipping eligibility.
Safety angle
A tighter radius is a practical safety tool, not just a convenience — it limits meetups to a distance you can reasonably vet, drive to safely, and repeat if needed. Marketplace scams to avoid covers meetup safety in more depth; a sane radius is the first line of defense before any of those specific precautions apply.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I turn off location entirely and see all listings?
- No. Marketplace requires a location to function — there is no nationwide, unfiltered browse mode. You can set the radius very wide, but a center point is always required.
- Why do I see listings that are clearly not local?
- Usually a shipped item (which is nationwide by design) mixed into local search results, or your location setting defaulting to a wrong or stale location.
- Does changing my location affect what I can see for buying versus what buyers see when I sell?
- They are set separately. Your browse location controls what you see; your listing's location controls which buyers can find what you sell.
- Is my exact address shown to buyers?
- No. Marketplace shows an approximate area, not a precise address. Exact meeting details are something you share directly in conversation, not through the listing.
