How to Sell on Facebook Marketplace
Create a Facebook Marketplace listing that actually sells: the fields that matter, pricing and photo tips, and how to handle messages and meetups safely.

Creating a listing
Where to click
- Marketplace
- Create new listing
- choose a category (Item, Vehicle, Home, etc.)
- fill in details
- Publish
Facebook renames these menus periodically. If a label does not match, read the screen you are on rather than forcing this exact wording.
The category you choose changes which fields appear — a vehicle listing asks for mileage and VIN-adjacent details; a general item listing asks for condition and category tags. Pick the closest match; a mis-categorized listing gets less search visibility than one filed correctly.
What actually gets a listing seen
- Price. Search and browse both let buyers filter by price range — an item priced noticeably above similar listings gets filtered out before a buyer even sees the photos.
- Photos, in order. The first photo is what appears in search results, so it should be the clearest single shot of the item. Following photos should show any wear, damage, or details a buyer would otherwise have to ask about — fewer messages asking "does it have X" means faster sales.
- A real description, not just a title. Include condition, reason for selling if relevant, and pickup logistics (stairs, parking) if the item is large.
- Category accuracy. Marketplace's own search relies on category tags; an item filed under the wrong category is nearly invisible to people searching that category directly.
Pricing and OBO
Listing "or best offer" — commonly abbreviated OBO — signals you will consider offers below the listed price. See what OBO means on Facebook Marketplace if you are unsure whether to use it; the short version is that it tends to invite more messages but also more lowball offers, so it suits items you are motivated to move quickly more than items with a firm minimum.
Handling messages
Marketplace messaging goes through regular Messenger. A few habits that separate real buyers from time-wasters and scammers:
- Respond with specifics (still available, price is firm/negotiable) rather than a generic reply — it filters out mass-messaging scammers who send the same line to dozens of listings.
- Do not move the conversation off Facebook before a deal is confirmed. Off-platform contact is a common lead-in to payment scams, covered in detail in Marketplace scams to avoid.
- Confirm pickup logistics (public location, daylight, another person present) before sharing your address.
Once it sells
Mark the listing as Sold so it stops drawing messages — an unmarked sold listing keeps generating "still available?" messages indefinitely. For local pickup, accept payment only at the handoff, in a form you can verify immediately (cash, or a payment app with the funds actually landed and cleared, not just a screenshot).

Frequently Asked Questions
- Does Facebook take a fee for Marketplace sales?
- Local pickup sales arranged in person have no Facebook fee. Shipped sales through Facebook's checkout involve a selling fee, similar to other online marketplaces.
- How many photos should a listing have?
- As many clear ones as the item needs to be understood — most functional listings use 4 to 8, covering the whole item, any damage, and close-ups of details a buyer would ask about.
- Can I sell to people outside my area?
- Yes if you offer shipping, which Facebook supports through its own checkout. Local pickup listings only reach buyers within the radius you set.
- Why is my listing not getting any views?
- Usually price, photos, or category. An overpriced or poorly categorized listing with one blurry photo gets buried under better ones for the same search.
