Facebook has muting in more than one place, and each is independent:

Facebook renames these menus periodically. If a label does not match, read the screen you are on rather than forcing this exact wording.
What each type of mute does
- Profile notification mute — you stop getting notified about that person's posts and activity, but their posts still appear in your feed if you have not also unfollowed them.
- Conversation mute — a specific Messenger thread stops sending notifications; the conversation itself remains fully intact and visible in your inbox.
- Group or Page mute — notifications from that group or Page stop, without leaving the group or unliking the Page.
None of these remove content from your feed by themselves — that is what unfollowing does. Muting and unfollowing are frequently combined: unfollow to stop seeing their posts, mute to also stop getting pinged about them.
Why mute instead of unfollow or restrict
Mute is the lightest option on the list, useful specifically when the problem is notification volume rather than content itself — a very active group, a friend who posts constantly, or a busy conversation thread you want to check on your own time rather than being pinged for.

Same path used to set it — the option toggles to Unmute or offers a duration reset. No waiting period applies, unlike unblocking.
