Does Facebook Notify Screenshots? What Is Actually Detected

Quick answer

No — with one narrow exception. Screenshotting a post, a profile, a photo, a story, or a normal Messenger conversation triggers no notification to anyone. The exception is disappearing messages in Messenger's end-to-end encrypted vanish mode: capture one of those and the other person sees a notice in the chat.

The actual notification map

• Posts and photos — no notification. Public or friends-only, no difference.
• Profiles — no notification, and no viewer log either. Facebook does not tell anyone who viewed their profile, which is the same missing data.
• Stories — no screenshot notification. The author sees your name in the viewer list because you viewed it, not because you captured it. Details in the story viewer guide.
• Messenger, normal chats — no notification.
• Messenger, vanish mode / disappearing messages — notification shown in the conversation. This is the one case, and it exists because the entire feature is a promise the message will not persist.
• Video calls — no notification for screenshots or screen recording, on any platform Facebook controls.

Why Facebook cannot fully detect screenshots anyway

On a desktop browser, a screenshot happens entirely in the operating system — the page has no reliable way to know. On phones the app can detect the system screenshot event, which is how vanish mode does it, but a second phone pointed at the screen defeats any detection ever built. This is why the practical rule is behavioural, not technical:

Anything visible on someone's screen can be captured, silently, forever. Privacy settings control who reaches your content in the first place; they cannot control what happens after it is displayed. That is the boundary drawn in the privacy settings checklist — and it is why deleting a post does not delete the copies.

The scam attached to this question

Because people keep asking, a supply of apps claims to answer it: "see who screenshotted your profile", "screenshot alerts for Facebook". Every one of them is fake. The data they promise does not exist for any third party to read. What the apps actually collect is your login — the question is popular enough that harvesting it is a business. If your real question is about being captured

Then act on the visibility side, before display rather than after:

1. Narrow post audiences to Friends, or use the profile lock if available.
2. Send sensitive things in vanish mode if they must be sent at all — it is the only surface with capture notice.
3. Assume the recipient can keep a copy regardless, and let that set what you send.
